Basic Studies (Bachelor of Science, BSc)
Vertiefungsmodul (Intensifying module; Basic Aspects in Plant Biotechnology)
WiSe; Practical course with accompanying theory sessions; daily
One of the fundamental principles of biotechnological research lies within the understanding and interventions of mRNA transcription and translation. Comprehensive understanding of underlying mechanisms is therefore a basic requirement for future biotechnologists. In this course, we teach basic methods of plant biotechnology to clarify the theoretical principles of mRNA translation. The methods of the course include molecular cloning of recombinant DNA-constructs, isolation of nucleic acids (genomic DNA, plasmid DNA, RNA), various PCR-techniques, isolation and transfection of plant protoplasts as well as SDS-PAGE and western blot and the analysis of enzyme activity as a measure of translation initiation in transfected protoplasts.
