Abstract
This study addresses incentives for efficient household appliances as a successful policy instrument to influence consumers' buying behaviour and to promote energy efficiency. The first part of the study identifies the main working principles by investigating the functionality of the instrument in different countries. It also identifies the main conditions of success to assess whether the instrument could be successful in Germany.
Chapter five discusses the transferability as well as prospects of success if the instrument would be adopted in Germany - both for single parts of the instrument and for the whole instrument.
Success factors for incentives for efficient households in Germany can be determined on the basis of successful programme parts and the experiences of the investigated programmes especially in Austria and the Netherlands. The implementation of such a programme is recommended for Germany, in particular with regard to the current discussion on the development of a new energy efficiency strategy.
