Snow sports with children and young people with oncological diseases
From 11 to 25 March, the snow sports project took place in cooperation with the Clinic for Paediatric Haematology and Oncology at the University Hospital. During the total of two weeks at the rustic Zafernahütte in Kleinwalsertal, 7-8 families each stayed for a week with a sick child and siblings. The concept of the trips follows family-oriented rehabilitation. It not only offers the families the opportunity to recover after the exhausting therapy, but the affected child also learns to trust his or her body again while skiing. The siblings, too, finally take centre stage again after having to take a back seat for a long time. Depending on the capacity of the team, ski courses or guiding tours through the ski area are also offered for the parents. In order for this concept to succeed, an interdisciplinary team is on site. The ski team consists of at least one state-certified instructor for disabled skiing, trained ski instructors and students who support the trips organised by Eike Boll as assistant ski instructors. Curricularly, this project is located in Module 10 "Cross-sport competences". The team is supplemented by a doctor and therapeutic staff from the UKM.
Kinderkrebshilfe Münster e.V. generously supports this project, as many of the people involved report the positive effects.
