Theoretical Nonlinear Physics II, ST 2020 (S.J. Linz)

There is as usual a Learnweb page accompanying the class. Students that want to attend the class
should send me a short email and I will return the corresponding password.
There are no lectures in the classroom, at least until May 31.
Until then, we will learn how distant teaching via Learnweb works.
I will provide once per week worked-out lecture notes as download and also sometimes additional reading assignments.

contents
The class deals with essentials of spatial and spatio-temporal structure or pattern formation in systems outside of equilibrium.
The primary focus is on various non-linear field equations (PDEs) that find applications in various physical or chemical systems.
The tentative list of topics covered by the class follows:
- introduction and basics
- systematic build-up of nonlinear field eqs.
- linear instability of homogeneous states
- nonlinear regular states/systematic reduction methods for nonlinear field eqs.
- properties of the canonical Eqs. for pattern formation, e.g. SH, RD, GL, KS eqs.
- localized states, fronts and pulses
- spatio-temporally irregular patterns
