The Tsardom as part of the German-speaking Republic of Letters in the 18th century

The expeditions organised by the Russian Academy of Sciences in the 18th century contributed to the scientific exploration of the territories of the Tsarist Empire. German scientists working in the Tsarist Empire shared these scientific findings in fields such as botany, ethnography and geography with other intellectuals in Western Europe, particularly in German-speaking territories. This news was then published and disseminated. However, this exchange of knowledge in the Republic of Letters is not sufficiently reflected in the existing literature. In my doctoral thesis, I aim to demonstrate that scientific information from the Tsarist Empire in the 18th century should be considered an integral part of the Republic of Letters.
