Research Project

Functional, structural and behavioural differences between sub-clinical high and low anxiety subjects

Learning, conditioning, and a genetic predisposition influence the processing of emotional stimuli. This presents the basis for the development of anxiety disorders and is associated with selective memory for emotional stimuli (Russo et al. 2009). Until today, it remains a highly debated issue if true memory biases exist in (subclinical) trait-anxious individuals.
To investigate this, we apply a statistical word-learning training in high and low trait anxiety subjects that allows the testing of immediate and delayed memory-bias effects. We predict higher memory-performance in high-anxiety subjects with regard to emotional stimuli only. Additionally, we expect that these behavioural differences are correlated with functional and structural differences in grey and white matter. Hence, all subjects are additionally administered to fMRI and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). Differences are particularly expected in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex regions, amygdalae and in the integrity of connecting fibers. (Funding: IZKF)
