Spring School in York
Status: 09.04.2024
The stay of the 02/2024 round in York has been completed. Below, the most frequently asked questions about the MYTEP project and the associated Spring School in York are answered - both for future participants and for general interested parties (based on experiences from previous runs). The FAQ list will be expanded and updated as necessary.
General Information
Has this project been done before?
- There have been three runs so far, further stays are being planned:
- February 2023: Pilot run: with 10 students in York
- October 2023: York students return to Münster
- February 2024: Visit of 11 students to York
- Reports:
- Final report of the pilot for download here: MYTEP 02-2023 (PDF)
- Final report of the Feb 2024 run here: MYTEP 02-2024 (PDF)
What is the general goal of the project?
- The project is intended to broaden your horizons as to what “education” actually means and how diverse it can be applied. It is also about international networking, strengthening the exchange between the twin cities of York and Münster and the opportunity to get to know a different system (“thinking out of the box”).
When do I have to be there?
- The program starts in York on the morning of February 19th, 2024. Please keep this in mind regarding your arrival at least one day before!
- There have been three runs so far, further stays are being planned:
Round trip
How are the outward and return journeys organized?
- The outward and return journey is organized individually by all participants .
- Flight: Germanwings flies from Düsseldorf to Manchester
- Arrival by car: by ferry via Rotterdam
- When using private cars, a so-called occupant insurance should be taken out
- Ferry: Overnight from Rotterdam to Hull, trains run very regularly from Hull to York.
-
Eurostar: We also recommend taking the Eurostar via the Eurotunnel (cheap tickets e.g. via Interrail).
Can I organize myself with fellow travelers?
- Yes. After the end of the application process, all participants will be networked by us.
What do I say at the border, what do I do in England?
- It is neither an internship nor work, but a university event.
Is a visa required?
- No, you are entering as a visitor to a two-week university event. No visa is required for this.
Accomodation
How is the accommodation organized?

-
Placement with host families may be possible.
- The following cheap accommodation is located near the center: https://astorhostels.com/hostels/york/
- You may also find suitable accommodation on the following website: https://www.spareroom.co.uk/

Stay on site
What courses can I take in the first week at the University of York?
- Information about this will follow soon.
- As soon as the courses have been determined, we will ask you to tell us your four desired elective courses. You will then be assigned two of these courses. Apart from that, you will attend a compulsory course.
Can I choose the school I want to visit in the second week? Can I also teach there?
- The school assignment is organized by the York side, ie you do not have a free choice. It is also not possible to teach yourself. Because: due to Brexit, among other things, it is not an internship, but a visit. You always have the status of a visitor and (like everyone involved in England) always wear an ID card that clearly states that you are not allowed to stay or move around the school alone. (Because for this you would need a so-called DBS check, ie a police check).
Is there a supporting program?
- In week 1, Associate professor Ursula Lanvers is your contact person at the University of York. She will do her best to offer you a good program. In principle, a discussion/exchange session, a campus tour, a visit to the German Department and a reflection session are conceivable (without guarantee).
- In week 2, Mirjam Buehler-Wiley (Head Teacher) is your contact person regarding school visits. She will also try to offer you a good program.
- Apart from that, you are completely free to organize your time outside of the program. For example, you can plan excursions yourself at the weekend, etc. You are also free to arrive earlier or later: As a tourist, you can stay in England for up to 90 days.
Financing
Is there financial support?
- The Münster-York partner association will try to get a subsidy. If this is granted, each participant will receive a subsidy of up to EUR 100. The question as to whether the 100 EUR will be granted will probably only be answered after the application deadline.
Do I have to pay tuition for the second week events at York University?
- No, the University of York does not charge a fee due to the special cooperation.
Application
What do I have to consider when applying?
-
The application process for the 02/2024 period has been completed. The following information is primarily for orientation purposes.
- Please refer to our checklist for internship applications: Checklist. The following exceptions apply: You need neither a mandatory consultation nor a letter of reference for MYTEP.
- The application will only be received and read by the ZfL's "International Mobility" department. Accordingly, please address your cover letter to: Dr. Nina Harsch and Adeline Weinberg.
- In the letter of motivation you refer to MYTEP and explain why the whole project appeals to you. Please use the key questions from the checklist (related to the project, not to individual schools).
- Since a good knowledge of English is crucial for the stay, please write your cover letter, CV and letter of motivation in English.
- Apart from the technical aspect of the English language, the main focus for the selection process lies in your letter of motivation. Academic achievements are also taken into account. In addition, the application must be formally correct, ie it must contain all the components specified in the checklist.
