The dancer, artist, documenta participant and until 2018 professor (HfBK Dresden) Ulrike Grossarth (*1952) has been working on her artistic project "School of Lublin" since 2006. In performances, exhibitions and individual works, she deals with Lublin's Jewish heritage and questions cultural-historical traditions of thought, language and representation.
The visual starting point for this research is the photo archive of Stefan Kiełsznia, which shows street scenes from the 1930s in Lublin, then one of the most important centres of Jewish life in Europe and today a twin city of Münster. Increasingly, Grossarth's work also refers to Hasidic writings and teachings, such as those of Jakob Jitzchak Horowitz (1745-1815), known as the "Seer of Lublin". Grossarth understands her "School of Lublin" metaphorically as a school of thought and an attempt to expand the usual canon of art and cultural concepts with foundations from Jewish approaches to thinking and teaching.
