PhD candidate Bruna Segalin in Münster for three month
Since 14th of December 2016 the brazilian Bruna Segalin from São Paulo is part of the working group climatology. The meteorologist and Phd candidate in atmospheric science is analyzing particulate matter from indoor elderly residence in São Paulo, to get to know the levels and composition, compare with WHO standards, find sources and some relationship with the health. For three month she will be analyzing her measurements with the help of
Prof. Dr. Otto Klemm. We're happy to have her here.Participation in Kolloquium AG Landschaftsökologie
At 12th of December the masterstudents Elena Plank und Bettina Breuer will give a overview of their masterthesis in the Kolloquium AG Landschaftsökologie (5pm, room 513). The topics are "LiDAR Messung am Aasee - Stadtklimatologische Untersuchung einer Kaltluftschneise" (Elena Plank) und "Fog and Water Vapor Fluxes above a primary subtropical mountain evergreen forest in SW China" (Bettina Breuer). Both presentations will be in german.
Visiting of kindergartners
ILÖK-Kolloquium on the 8th of November
We welcome Prof. Neng-Huei (George) Lin from the National Central University, Chung-Li, Taiwan (Department of Atmosperic Sciences) in Münster. He will present a talk about "Overview of Chemical, Physical, Optical and Radiative Mesurements of Biomass-burning Aerosol and related pollutants during the Seven South East Asian Studies (7-SEAS) Spring Campains" in the ILÖK-Kolloquium on the 8th of November 2016 at 6 pm in the lecture hall Geo 1. This Event is creditabel in MSc Lök, module M2/M1.
This semester Hanna Lokys joins the team of the research goup climatology. We welcome her and wish her a good start in her new job.
Congratulations on the wedding
Congratulations to Elisa (nee Fleischer) and Viktor Braeckevelt on the wedding. We wish them all the best for their future!

Kids-University: Pupils attended the climatology working group
Photos
Within the framework of the "Kids University" 80 Pupils of the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff Gymnasiums in Dülmen attended the climatology working group. They visited the weather station on the instituts roof and were informed about the functioning of modern weather forecasts.

Exchange between biosphere and atmosphere
For the climatology master course “bio-/ atmosphere exchange” a measurement station was established at Horstmarer Landweg. Different meteorological data are measured for four weeks in May. With eddy covariance and Bowen ratio fluxes of carbon dioxide and water vapor shall be determined.
Congratulations on finishing the doctorate
Fog experiments in China
In the end of December a setup for fog research was established in southwest China. The collected data will be analysed in various mater theses. Visibility, carbon dioxide flux and water vapour flux are being measured continuously with the eddy covariance method. During fog events drop size is measured additionally and water is collected with an active fog collector for chemical analysis. At the moment the third promising fog event is happening.

sensational
Today, 12 December 2015, the 21st Conference of the Parties adopted the Paris agreement on climate change: all 196 participating countries declaired their agreement. We are extremely pleased with this dimplomatic masterpiece. We also know that it needs consequent implementation to become effective.
The 30-page text says: „The Conference of the Parties … welcomes the efforts of all non-Party stakeholders to address and respond to climate change, including those of civil society, the private sector, financial institutions, cities and other subnational authorities“
This calls all of us to contribute actively tot he global efforts to mitigate climate change. The climate council of the municipality of Münster (www.klimabeirat-muenster.de) feels more than encouraged to continue its activities.

We say goodbye to Dr. Julian Deventer
Dr. Julian Deventer our Colleague of many years is starting a postdoc at the University of California in Berkeley. We wish him all the best for his future and thank him for his remarkable dedication to education and research at our working group.
Ceilometer CHM 15k „Nimbus“
The Climatology working group of the Institute of Landscape Ecology operates a Ceilometer type CHM 15k „Nimbus“ of the G. Lufft Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH (www.lufft.com) since 21 April 2015. Since 10 June, cloud base height as well as total cloud cover are presented online (Weather).
A ceilometer is a laser remote-sensing instrument to observe the atmosphere. It uses the Lidar technique (Lidar: light detection and ranging) to emit 5000-7000 short light pulses (wavelength 1064 nm) per second into the atmosphere. The light is partially reflected and scattered by aerosols, clouds and rain. The receiver module measures the backscattered signal. The distance from ground is calculated from the travelling time of the laser pulses and the speed of light. Further information, for example the density of a cloud layer, is retrieved from the intensity of the back-scattered light signal. The cloud base heights up to 15 km, cloud cover, vertical visibility, aerosol layer heights, and the boundary layer height can be determined.International Conference on Fog, Fog Collection and Dew
The 7th International Conference on Fog, Fog Collection and Dew will take place in Wrocław, Poland on 24-29 July, 2016. Prof. Klemm is the Scientific Committee Chair of the conference.link

New measurement setup on the institute’s roof
A new measurement setup was established on the institute’s roof. Particles, ammonia, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, nitrous oxide and methane are measured as part of a master thesis. Some of the instruments are new and tested in this setup.
New web design of the Climatology working group
The website of the Climatology working group is now available in the new web design of the Westfälische Wilhelms -Universität Münster. The new design is well suitable for mobile devices. There are some small bugs in the visualization of the weather data that will be fixed in the next few weeks.
Research stay in Taiwan
