Study programmes
What can I study at the University of Münster?
Our Study Guide provides you with an overview of all degree programmes and study offers at the University.
What degree programmes are available in English?
We offer only one English taught Bachelor’s programme (B. Sc. in Human Movement in Sports and Exercise)
All other programmes are taught in German.
What are restricted-admission degree programmes ?
"Restricted admission" means that only a certain number of study places are available in selected degree programmes you have to apply for. These limits are also designated by the Latin term "numerus clausus" (NC) which literally means "closed number".

What are non-restricted degree programmes ?
For degree programmes that do not require admission, no selection procedures are carried out for the places to be allocated.
All applicants who fulfil the admission requirements are accepted.
You can get a complete overview of the undergraduate degree programs at the University of Münster that currently do not require admission if you use the filter options in the study guide and set the value "admission-free" in the "Selecting the admission procedure" field.
University Admissions Qualification/Admission
What are the admission requirements for the degree programmes at the University of Münster?
You will need (in German or English):
- a university entrance qualification (your school-leaving certificates and possibly university entrance examination certificates or certificates for semesters already studied)
- Language skills in German (DSH 2 for most subjects)
Language skills in English (for English-language programmes)
exact information on the required language level can be found in the admission regulations of the respective degree programme
If you have a school and/or university degree from India, China or Vietnam, you must have it checked and certified by the Academic Evaluation Centre in your capital city.
Can I study in Germany with my educational background?
If you want to study in Germany, you need to have a University Entrance Qualification. The University Entrance Qualification refers to academic credentials, such as a school-leaving certificate or, in some cases, a combination of a school-leaving certificate and a period of study/a preparatory year.

Please note that the university entrance qualification cannot be checked in advance by the University of Münster.
Can I obtain a conditional admission?
There is no conditional admission at the University of Münster.
Can I attend a Studienkolleg, to be able to study in Germany?
Completing the final exam after the course at the Studienkolleg, the so-called Feststellungsprüfung, qualifies you to apply for a degree programme. However, Muenster doesn’t have a Studienkolleg, but you can find out more at this link.

Before applying to a Studienkolleg please double-check if the qualifications you earned in your home country qualify you for German universities or not

Application
How do I apply?
At the University of Münster, you apply for admission online.
Here you will find all information for EU/EEA and
non-EU/EEA applicants without a European university entrance qualification.
EU (with registration at Hochschulstart) and Non-EU applicants apply via our online application during the application period.
How to apply for non-restricted degree programmes ?
Non-EU applicants also apply online via our online application during the application period.
EU applicants:
First you have to perform the online enrolment completely. You will receive an email with your enrolment form, your enrolment number and important information about the further necessary steps. You log in the info portal of the enrolment and make the required uploads.
You will receive information on the payment of the semester fee by post within one week after the successful enrolment.
What documents do I need for the Application?
You will be asked to upload the following documents:
- School leaving certificate/secondary school certificate/previous education certificates
- Certificate of sufficient German language proficiency (depending on the degree programme)
Please note that additional documents must also be uploaded, such as:
- the assessment test from the German Studienkolleg (When attending a Studienkolleg)
- transcript of university records (For study periods)
- university degree certificate (With a completed university degree)
- APS certificate (for Applicants from China, India or Vietnam)
If your certificates are issued in a language other than German or English, please upload the document in original language together with an official translation of this in German or English in one PDF file up to 2 MB.
What deadlines should I be aware of?
Different deadlines apply to different programmes and applicants. We only accept applications during the application period.In our Study Guide (English-Taught-Programmes) you can find out whether your desired degree programme can be started in the winter and/or in the summer semester.
Will my documents be checked before I apply ?
You are responsible for checking your documents yourself. These will be checked by the Admissions Office during the application process once the documents have been submitted. A preliminary check will not take place.
You can check your university entrance qualification in advance without obligation via Anabin - or DAAD - databases.
Can I submit documents at a later date?
It is not possible to submit documents after the application deadline.
How long do I have to wait for an acceptance or rejection?
You can track the status of your application in our Info Portal. At the end of your application, you will receive your log in information. Please check the status of your application at least twice a week. The letters of rejection and acceptance will be send 6-8 weeks after the application deadline.
Are there examinations for admission?
There are specific entrance examinations for some degree programmes in the music arts and sports sciences.
How to enrol for a higher semester?
An application for a higher semester via the application portal of the University of Münster is required if the desired degree programme is subject to admission restrictions in higher semesters.
You must submit a Placement certificate issued by the degree course advisor, confirming recognition of academic achievement (Einstufungsbescheinigung).
This document is not necessary if you have already studied the same course of study you want to enrol for at the University of Münster at another German university (i.e. you want to continue your studies after a break or change universities). In this case, please submit a certificate of de-registration that provides your studied semesters (Fachsemester) in the respective course of study.
Language Skills
Do I have sufficient language skills?
The majority of the degree programmes at the University of Münster are taught in German.
To gain admission to a German-taught degree programme, you need to have very good German language skills.

programme websites.Are there preparatory language courses?
The Language Centre of the University of Münster offers international students a "German as a Foreign Language" (DaF) course which prepares them for the DSH examination. Please note that basic knowledge of German (B1) is required to take part in this course.
The course fee is currently 500 euros per semester. Because language course participants are enrolled at the University of Münster, they must pay the regular semester fee as well – about 320 euros per semester.

Student financing
How much money do I need each month to study and live?
Students in Münster normally need around € 1000 each month to cover living expenses in Münster without having to work part-time. There are no tuition fees charged for regular degree programmes at the University of Münster; the only exception applies to in-service continuing education programmes. However, at the beginning of each semester, you will have to pay a semester fee of around 320 euros. Language course students must pay an additional course fee of € 500 per semester. The residence permit, if applicable, costs about € 110 per year, and then there are the monthly living expenses.
Studying in Germany involves living expanses. Unlike in other countries, scholarships are not common in Germany. Please clarify your study financing in advance.

Can I get a scholarship ?
Because students are not required to pay tuition for degree programmes in Germany (with few exceptions), there are no full scholarship programmes offered at universities.
Partial scholarship programmes are available, e.g. the “ProTalent” scholarship programme at the University of Münster, as well as numerous individual funding opportunities.
Please note that many scholarships have special eligibility requirements, such as excellent academic achievement, volunteer commitment during one’s studies, and in many cases, German citizenship.

Accomodation in Münster
Will I get a Dormitory room during my studies?
You will not automatically be allocated a Dormitory room when you are admitted!
Many first-year students apply for a room in a hall of residence in the Studierendenwerk's facilities, but you can expect long waiting times.
Where can I live during my studies?

Visa/residence
How to apply for Visa / Residence permit?
International students normally require a visa for study purposes. A tourist visa is not sufficient as you would have to reapply for the correct visa from your home country! Participants of university-preparatory language courses require a visa for study purposes with university preparatory courses. Students who are citizens of EU and EEA member states or Switzerland do not require a visa.
