THE PROTECTION OF INFORMATION IS OUR MISSION

The aim of the Information Security Office is to protect official data from misuse, loss and manipulation. It ensures that research, studying and teaching can take place in a secure environment. To this end, it supports all members of the University of Münster in protecting sensitive data.

The Rectorate of the University of Münster commissioned the Information Security Office to set up an information security management system (ISMS) and to develop and improve it on an ongoing basis. In accordance with the agreement on cyber security with the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, an ISMS based on BSI IT-Grundschutz is to be established by the end of 2026. The Office identifies security-relevant processes and objects, their threats and risks and derives security objectives from this.

The area of responsibility also includes so-called policy work. The Office formulates guidelines that contribute to information security. While the guidelines form the abstract guidelines for action, the handouts are formulated pragmatically and can be updated at any time.

“We don't want to forbid anything to university staff. Rather, we want to enable processes. They just have to be safe.”
Michael Engemann, Deputy CISO
