We celebrate International Women's Day every year on 8 March. It serves to remind us of the discrimination that women face every day, but also the accomplishments they have achieved over the centuries. The day highlights the battles that still need to be fought and at the same time, makes us appreciate what others have achieved for the cause before us. With this in mind, we would like to invite you to join us on a journey through the history of the University of Münster and women’s movements in Germany and around the world. Starting with the first female students at the University of Münster in 1908, we illustrate how gender equality has evolved into the institutionally anchored activities conducted at the University of Münster today.

This project is largely based on the anthology “Let them think”. 100 Years of Higher Education for Women in Münster, published in 2008 by Sabine Happ and Veronika Jüttemann. The anthology is a compilation of the results of the project 100 Years of Higher Education for Women at the University of Münster, which was carried out between the summer semester 2007 and the summer semester 2008 by the University Archive and the Senior Guest Programme at the University of Münster in cooperation with the Department of Design at the Münster University of Applied Sciences under the project managers Dr Veronika Jüttemann, Dr Sabine Happ and Prof Dr Claudia Grönebaum.

We would like to express our sincere thanks for this project and in particular to the head of the University Archive, Dr Sabine Happ, who not only provided us with the materials, but also enriched us with valuable information and treasures from the University Archive.

Special thanks also go to the Web and Design department of the University of Münster. Vanessa Dartmann, Anja Schmid and Leonie Isfort implemented the project in a highly creative and competent manner.
