The idea of SWAG – Cities become smart is to encourage students to create smart city projects for their own school, environment or city. University students and researchers accompany the pupils and the projects. By the use of IT and the digital integration, several urban fields can be supported such as energy, environment, public transport, security, citizen science etc.
Within the projects, students ask citizens and administration representatives about interests, wishes and hopes, but also problems they might see regarding a city of the future – a smart city. They learn about concepts of smart cities as well as technologies that are used in geoinformatics. Further they create their own projects based on microcontrollers, sensors, public displays, apps and the world wide web. Results of the pupils’ projects will be presented via press and online media.
SWAG is one of 15 winning projects within the Hochschulwettbewerbs 2014 , an initiative from Wissenschaft im Dialog within Wissenschaftsjahrs 2014 “DIE DIGITALE GESELLSCHAFT”
