I will give a quick introduction to variational bifurcation theory, focusing on applications to prove multiplicity of solutions in geometric problems. The main results I plan to discuss regard the classical Yamabe problem (of finding a constant scalar curvature metric in a prescribed conformal class) and some of its variants. This is based on joint work with P. Piccione and B. Santoro.
