The cohomology groups of vanishing cycles of a function on an ambient manifold carry in the complex algebraic context a canonical mixed Hodge structure. We discuss the purity of these Hodge structures under suitable geometric assumptions. Important examples come from moduli spaces for representations of quivers with potentials. Applications to the positivity conjecture for quantum cluster algebras are discussed in the paper arXiv:1307.3379 .
