In the late 70s Cheeger initiated a program of "extending the theory of Laplace operator on smooth manifolds to certain Riemannian spaces with singularities". In the past decades this program has been very influential. In my talk I will review aspects of this program, explain various approaches, and outline what is known and what is not known.
