I shall begin by recalling the classical rigidity and super-rigidity theorems for lattices in higher rank Lie groups. I shall then discuss related theorems for mapping class groups of surfaces and automorphism groups of free groups, emphasising how the proofs underscore the deep analogy between lattices and these other families of groups. I shall end with a description of the recent advances in our understanding of the morphisms that exist between these groups.
