Welcome to the website of the research center Gregory of Nyssa
Gregory of Nyssa (born around 338/9 and died after 394) is one of the three “Big Cappadocians”, together with his older brother Basil of Caesarea (“the Great”) and his friend Gregory of Nazianzus (the Theologist”). In Eastern church he is described as one of the most important theologists for the development of dogmas, as well as monastic and mystic tradition.
Gregory of Nyssa is an example for an epoch in which tensions arise between Christianity with its attempts to formulate their beliefs and the still present ancient religious heritages. This leaves a small path for theology between adaption, transformation and distinction. The research center Gregory of Nyssa of the WWU presents an interface between theology and classical philology.
