History of the research center
The research center Gregory of Nyssa was founded 1966 by Prof. Heinrich Dörrie in Münster. It was a project developed by the Fritz-Thyssen-Charity, the commission of the academy of sciences, North-Rhine-Westphalia and the university of Münster.
It was aimed at creating a dictionary of words and phrases used by Gregory of Nyssa. This followed Werner Jaeger’s ideas who pursued to publish an edition with works of Gregory of Nyssa (Gregorii Nysseni Opera = GNO), which was started in 1921. After his death, Hermann Langerbeck continued his works from 1952. During this time, there have been first drafts of a collection of notes which later form the basis of the lexicon. After Langerbeck’s death, Heinrich Dörrie continued his projects and founded the research center. After Dörrie’s death (1983), Prof. Wolf-Dieter Haufschild was new director. These days, the research center Gregory of Nyssa is located in the university of Münster. One main sponsor is the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
