Dr. Ulrich Haspel studied music teaching and conducting/choral conducting as well as musicology, history and art history in Würzburg and Cologne. He is a prizewinner of the Archbishop Rohracher Study Fund (Salzburg) and author of various encyclopedia articles and specialist essays on Mozart's Salzburg church music.

From 1990 to 2006, he taught conducting and choral conducting in the Department of School Music at the Cologne University of Music and Dance, specializing in literary studies, analysis, rehearsal methodology, (choral) scoring, voice training and conducting.

From 1998 to 2019, he succeeded Herma Kramm as director of the Collegium musicum vocale at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster. His repertoire, which grew out of his artistic work with the university choir, the student madrigal choir and Ensemble 22, encompassed all eras from the Middle Ages to music of the 21st century and includes numerous world premieres.

Ensemble 22, founded by Dr. Ulrich Haspel in 1998 from suitable members of the University Choir and the Student Madrigal Choir, focused on demanding a cappella vocal music from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. In 2001, Ensemble 22 was honored at the III. International Choir Festival and Choir Competition in Grado in the categories “Sacred Music” and “Mixed Voice Vocal Ensembles”.

With the University Choir, the Student Madrigal Choir and Ensemble 22, Dr. Ulrich Haspel has performed a total of 248 concerts in 21 years, including numerous concert tours within Germany as well as to Italy, Poland, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Israel. An essential part of these concert tours was the cultivation of friendly relations with choirs from other universities, including Bologna, Burgos, Lublin, Orléans, Poitiers and York, as well as cooperation with various choirs in the context of Münster's city partnerships.

Since 1998, Dr. Ulrich Haspel has been teaching music theory at the Institute for Music Education with a focus on harmony and analysis, composition and practical vocal arranging.
