Annual conference examines causes of legal pluralism

© KHK EViR

The third annual conference of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg “Legal Unity and Pluralism” at the University of Münster investigates the causes of legal pluralism. From 7 to 9 April, the international conference will bring together numerous researchers from the fields of history, law and social sciences.

Law is rarely uniform, but is often characterised by spatial, personal or temporal fragmentation. Reasons for this include the special rights of social groups or political and religious demarcations. This is true for earlier historical periods as well as for the present day, where legal systems may appear uniform only at first glance. The spectrum of lecture topics therefore ranges from diversity in the Roman Empire to the legal handling of confessionally mixed marriages in the early modern period and complex questions of justice in post-colonial states.

The conference will take place at the Professional School of the University of Münster (Königsstr. 47). All interested are welcome to register by 31 March.
