Emilia Mataix Ferrándiz and David Bachrach new at the Centre
Two more fellows and a research assistant have taken up their work
On 1 September, two new fellows started their research at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg. Dr. Emilia Mataix Ferrándiz holds a doctorate in archaeology and one in law. Most recently, she worked at the “Centre of Excellence in Law, Identity and the European Narratives” at the University of Helsinki. As a specialist in ancient Roman commercial law, she will investigate maritime trade on the Mediterranean as a site of particular legal pluralism at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg. In particular, she explores the impact of subaltern actors from different legal backgrounds on general legal practice.
Prof. Dr. David Bachrach has been a professor of medieval history at the University of New Hampshire since 2014. He is an expert on medieval warfare and has published several books on the subject. Furthermore, his research areas include the administrative history of the Roman-German Empire and England. At the centre, he will deal with the royal courts in the Salian Empire. He investigates the question of whether the kings thus created instances that also provided non-noble subjects with access to justice.
With Benjamin Seebröker, the centre has also got a new research associate. Previously, the historian worked as a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation at the TU Dresden on his dissertation on the history of violence in England in the 18th and early 19th century. At the centre, he will use a comparison of Upper Lusatia and Ireland to examine how legal pluralization or standardization tendencies and social diversity mutually influenced each other in the early modern period. In addition, he will work with the rest of the team to ensure that operations run smoothly.
We welcome all new members and wish a successful start.
