Prof. Dr. Reinold Schmücker

From 1985 to 1991, Reinold Schmücker studied philosophy, modern German literature and Protestant theology in Tübingen and Hamburg. In 1997, he received his doctorate from the University of Hamburg with a dissertation supervised by Ulrich Steinvorth and Wolfgang Bartuschat on the subject of How is art aesthetics possible? From 1991 to 1995 he was a research assistant to Dorothea Frede, from 1997 to 2004 an assistant professor at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Hamburg, and from 2004 to 2009 Managing Director of the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald. He has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Münster since 2009 and Dean of its Faculty of History/Philosophy since 2020.
From 2010 to 2018, Schmücker was a member of the Centre for Advanced Study in Bioethics at the University of Münster. In the 2015/16 academic year, he led an international research group on the Ethics of Copying at Bielefeld University’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research together with the legal scholar Thomas Dreier and the Czech media scholar Pavel Zahrádka. Since 2023, he has been the Director of the Centre for Advanced Study Access to Cultural Goods in the Digital Change at the University of Münster, which he leads together with art historian Ursula Frohne.
Reinold Schmücker was a part-time journalist for many years. Between 1984 and 2006, he wrote several hundred articles for daily and weekly newspapers, sometimes using the acronym res. In 1993/94 he was an editorial assistant for the Archiv für Geschichte der Philosophie. Since 2002 he has co-edited the book series KunstPhilosophie, and since 2023 he has been co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Ästhetik und Allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft.
