Integrative Biodiversity Research

Integrative biodiversity research within CIBRA combines two approaches: On the one hand, we combine different methods for recording biodiversity for a better data basis, faster insights and increased participation of citizens. To this end, we develop research approaches that integrate two or more of the following methods:

  • Field research with long-term monitoring and re-surveys
  • Digitisation of historical data and collection specimens
  • Genomic and molecular methods such as DNA sequencing
  • Remote sensing
  • Automatic biodiversity recording
  • Citizen science

On the other hand, integrative biodiversity research goes beyond a purely scientific view of biodiversity and includes social, economic and political factors. The aims of integrative biodiversity research at CIBRA therefore also include

  • raising awareness of biodiversity loss - including on our own doorstep - through education and public relations work
  • analysing socio-ecological factors such as demographic developments or biophilia and biophobia
  • interdisciplinary collaboration and cooperation with various civil society and political institutions

In view of the global loss of species, innovative methods, interdisciplinary cooperation and public support are needed to better and more quickly understand complex interactions between species and their habitats. This is the only way to develop nature conservation strategies that are not only effective, but are also accepted and actively shaped by society.
