Mathematics Münster

Dynamics – Geometry – Structure

Mathematics is a key technology for scientific and economic progress. New discoveries in mathematics are not only interesting in themselves, but they often lead to unexpected breakthroughs in other sciences as well.

We will tackle fundamentally important mathematical problems, viewing mathematics as an organic whole with countless interactions. The research in our Cluster of Excellence "Mathematics Münster" is unified by three major approaches: focusing on the underlying structure of a given problem, taking the geometric viewpoint and studying the relevant dynamics of group or semigroup actions. The theories which we will build will not only solve the problems under consideration but also many others of a similar nature; these theories will also raise exciting new questions.

Bielefeld-Münster Seminar on Groups, Geometry and Topology

15 July 2025

This is a joint seminar of research groups from Bielefeld and Münster. It started in 2015 and usually takes place once every semester, either in Bielefeld or in Münster. The topics of interest include group theory, geometry and topology. Everyone is welcome to participate in the lectures.

Curvature and Global Shape

28 July – 1 August 2025

The purpose of the meeting is to study relationships between local and global invariants in Riemannian Geometry. Our intention is to bring together experts in the field as well as young mathematicians.

YMCN autumn school: Probability and dynamics on groups

22–26 September 2025

The interaction between probability, dynamics and group theory is an active and growing area of research with exciting recent developments. The goals of this autumn school are to expose young researchers to the diverse set of available tools in these areas, to facilitate collaborations and to stimulate new interactions.

A milestone on the academic journey

Last week, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science held its graduation ceremony in the "Schloss". All doctoral graduates who successfully completed their doctorate in the past year were invited to attend, along with their families and friends. We congratulate all graduates, especially the 25 doctoral graduates from Mathematics Münster!

Excellence confirmed: "Mathematics Münster" receives continued funding

Great joy at Mathematics Münster: Today, Thursday (22 May), the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Science and Humanities Council (WR) announced that the Cluster of Excellence "Mathematics Münster: Dynamics - Geometry - Structure" will be founded for a further seven years from January 2026. This makes the Cluster one of 70 research centres at German universities that are being funded in the "first funding line" of the Excellence Strategy. They prevailed in the competition with a total of 98 applications.
