Mathematics Learning and Problem Solving in STEM-based Contexts
Prof.in Lyn English, PhD
Mathematics education tends to remain overshadowed in integrated STEM-based studies, yet its importance in today’s disruptive world is increasingly evident. In this symposium I will discuss the need to develop both disciplinary knowledge and ways of thinking (e.g., design-based thinking) to promote students’ STEM-based problem solving and learning innovation (generating new knowledge and ideas that can be applied to solving new problems). Examples of classroom investigations to be presented address topics in mathematics and STEM education in elementary/primary schools, such as: measurement, geometry and spatial reasoning (designing a mini-golf course); energy sources, coordinates, and spatial reasoning (designing a model sustainable town); angle measurement and statistics (exploring tsunamis and the impact of shoreline angles/slope on inundation distance); and informal minimisation (determining a new location for a frog’s “lily pad” home so that the total path is as short as possible to each of his 3 friends’ homes).
