Im Juli 2004 fand in Erlangen ein zweitägiges, internationales Symposium zur zyprischen Archäologie statt - organisiert von der Leventis-Stiftung (Vassos Karageorghis), dem Institut für Interdisziplinäre Zypern-Studien der Universität Münster (Sabine Rogge) und dem Institut für Klassische Archäologie der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Hartmut Matthäus). Die an diesem Symposium beteiligten Wissenschaftler aus Dänemark, Deutschland, Finnland, Großbritannien, den USA und Zypern befaßten sich in ihren Vorträgen mit einer Vielzahl von Aspekten der zyprischen Religion und Gesellschaft: z.B. mit Bestattungssitten, der Bedeutung von Instrumenten im kultischen Bereich, mit ikonographischen und strukturellen Besonderheiten der zyprischen Plastik, den Beziehungen zwischen Religion und Kupferherstellung, den vor allem in der kleinformatigen Terrakotta-Plastik dargestellten Szenen aus dem Alltagsleben, den diversen Funktionen von Siegeln etc. Sämtliche Vorträge bewegten sich in einem zeitlichen Rahmen, der vom späten 2. Jahrtausend v. Chr. bis in das 5. vorchristliche Jahrhundert reichte.
