Towards Sustainable Water Use on Mediterranean Islands
Addressing Conflicting Demands and Varying Hydrological, Social and Economic Conditions
The Institute was cooperation partner in this European Union-sponsored project. Based on an interdisciplinary and participatory approach, the water management on Mediterranean islands was analysed within the scope of this project. It aimed at providing recommendations for a just and sustainable water use according to the Water Directive of the European Community. These recommendations were compiled on the bases of scientific and engineering research and included socio-economic aspects. The development process involved representatives from Government and non-governmental organisations as well as other interest groups.
Prof. Dr. Manfred A. Lange (Director of the Centre for Environmental Research of the University of Münster) supervised the project. Overall, scientists from Germany, France, Greece, Great Britain, Italy, Spain and Cyprus were involved.
A two-week study course – SUSTAINIS (Sustainable Use of Water on Mediterranean Islands: Conditions, Obstacle and Perspectives) – hosted by the Centre for Environmental Research of the University of Münster (Prof. Dr. Manfred A. Lange) in September/October, 2003, in Agia Napa (Cyprus) was closely connected with the MEDIS project. In this European Commission-sponsored course, 24 graduands and doctorands – with natural, social and engineering science backgrounds – from 12 European countries dealt with questions and problems surrounding sustainable water use for Mediterranean islands. Dr. Sabine Rogge, manager of the Cyprus-institute, was part of the international and interdisciplinary team of “water experts” (20 persons altogether) who tutored the students and post-graduates in eight course blocks. She imparted fundamental knowledge to the course participants in the area of ancient water supply. The files of the study course have been published: Manfred A. Lange, Dörte Poszig, Annett Herrmann (Eds.), Water on Mediterranean Islands: Advanced Study Course SUSTAINIS. ZUFO-Berichte Bd. 4 (2005).
