Andrea Estrella presented at the 124th Session of the International Coffee Council in Nairobi
TRANS SUSTAIN’s Andrea Estrella presented a summary of the report “Profitability of coffee farming in selected Latin American countries”; a collaboration with the Agricultural and Resource Economics Department at UC Davis and The International Coffee Organization (ICO). The report uses the data collected by the TRANS SUSTAIN project and shows that coffee producers in labor-intensive countries in Latin America face both short- and long-term challenges to profitability. The report was very well received by Member countries, and it started a conversation on the need to systematically collect production costs in important coffee regions.
The Council is the highest authority of the ICO, with a representative of each member government. The council meets in March and September to discuss coffee matters, approve strategic documents and consider the recommendations of advisory bodies and committees. This Session had the special participation of the President of Kenya.
