Project
B7: Book Gifts in Late Medieval and Early Modern England
| Abstract |
This project investigates the distinctive characteristics of book gifts in England from the end of the fourteenth to the end of the sixteenth century on the basis of a general theory of gift-giving. The values attached to gift-giving in general, and to the book as gift in particular, are of special interest in assessing the functions of book gifts in processes of symbolic communication. Special attention will be paid to the media shift from the (late) medieval scribal culture to the print culture of Early Modern Times.
