Diamonds and more: Minerals are the building blocks of Earth. Their genesis, structure, and properties are the subjects of mineralogical research. Mineralogy is highly interdisciplinary, combining material science and geoscience methods. More information about research of the Mineralogy group ► can be found here.
Petrology
What is a volcano and how are volcanoes formed? What is the difference between igneous and metamorphic rocks? What does the Earth look like on the inside? That is Petrology in a nutshell. We both work in the field and in the laboratory, we study natural rocks and ores from various localities world-wide and we use experiments at high pressures and high temperatures to simulate processes in the Earth's interior that lead to the formation of igneous and metamorphic rocks. More information about research of the petrology group at Münster University group ► can be found here.
Geochemistry
Earth, moon and stars: Geochemistry deals with the distribution of elements and isotopes, but not only on Earth. What is the age of our planet? How did the solar system form? Using modern analytical equipment, Geochemistry helps answer such fundamental questions. More information about research of the Geochemistry group ► can be found here.
