This class looks at the history of the US university system in the long 1960s. It will not only explore student activist movements, particularly the Civil Rights and anti-war movements. It will also pay attention to developments among conservative students, an often-overlooked but important student group during this period. Through this group, we will look at their impact on the Barry Goldwater presidential campaign and the resurgence of conservative politics in the United States. This course will also turn to the West German student movements, not just including the academic student left, but also young Christian Democrats. This aspect of the course will also explore how the 1968 generation used Auschwitz and their fear of a new fascist regime as part of their activism.
Note: This is a reading and discussion-intensive seminar
