John Locke was one of the most influential educational philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment. His famous treatise ”Some Thoughts concerning Education” (1693) inspired many of the leading pedagogues and politicians during his lifetime and in the following century in the whole of Europe. Jean-Jacques Rousseau – who was himself an eminent educational thinker – praised Locke as a ”wise man” whose texts ought to be closely read by all people interested in schooling and learning. But what was so special about Locke and his educational ideas? The seminar will highlight Locke’s most important teachings and put his thoughts into the context of late 17th century and early 18th century philosophy.
