The rising tensions in the global economy stand out as one of the most important developments in world politics today. After a long era of increasing global economic integration, contemporary developments, such as the US-China trade war or Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, point to the risk of geoeconomic fragmentation. This course explores the intersection of economics and geopolitics and provides a comprehensive understanding of the strategies and impacts of geoeconomic actions. Readings will introduce the historical context, fundamental concepts, and theoretical foundations of geoeconomics. The main part of this course is devoted to the critical examination of case studies of geoeconomic strategies employed by various countries, including trade wars, sanctions, energy politics, technology, and digital sovereignty. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze the role of economic tools in geopolitical strategy and develop critical thinking skills in assessing the impact of geoeconomics on global politics.
