This course centers on the question of history education in the digital age. Pundits and educators have increasingly questioned the utility of history education in an era where students can supposedly just google the ”facts” about history instead of reading books or learning how to argue and think historically. This course critiques that notion and instead argues for history education’s potential to help make sense of a fluid digital mediascape where ideas about truth, ”fake news,” and media literacy have become paramount in our own society. Three books anchor this seminar: Jason Steinhauer’s History Disrupted, Sam Wineburg’s Why Learn History (When It’s Already on Your Phone) and Holocaust Memory in the Digital Mediascape by Jennifer Evans, Erica Fagen, and Meghan Lundrigan.
This seminar will be conducted in English and all assignments are expected to be conducted in English. International students are especially welcome! This is a reading-intensive seminar and students are expected to participate in class discussion.
