"Farce is far more serious" is the headline given by Louis Mackey to his translation of a section on farce from Søren Kierkegaard's book Gjentagelsen (Repetition, 1843). This seminar will explore the history of this fascinating theatrical genre with a focus on British farce from the 18th to the 20th century, but also address its roots in classical antiquity and the middle ages, and trace its survival in modern comedy and film. How serious this most hilarious of dramatic genres can or should be taken remains an open question to be dealt with this winter semester.
