In this course, students will build on and consolidate the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired in the foundational modules ‘Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies’ I and II. At the centre of our discussions will be close readings of Stevenson’s Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, as well as several of Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes short stories, and we will draw on a variety of theoretical approaches, including feminist criticism, gender and queer studies, postcolonial studies, disability studies, and adaptation theory. By applying these approaches to the prose fiction texts, we will hone your skills in literary analysis and explore how different theoretical lenses shape our understanding of texts.
