The notion of consensus or agreement has long played a central role in those liberal or deliberative approaches to democracy that dominated political theory in the second half of the 20th century. Considering contemporary societal developments this consensus on consensus seems to be breaking apart. That's why in this seminar we will – once again – look at those democratic theories that take (deep) disagreement and (fundamental) conflict as starting points of their considerations. Among others we will be reading texts by Chantal Mouffe, Hannah Arendt, Helmut Dubiel, William Connolly, and James Tully.
