This standard course introduces students to the field of International Political Economy (IPE). It provides an overview of how the interplay of states and markets shapes international economic relations and what opportunities and challenges arise from the increasing interdependence of economic relations. We discuss some main theoretical perspectives and concepts of IPE, and then look at the different issue areas, including trade, global value chains, foreign direct investment, and the international monetary and financial system. We also reflect on the dynamics, consequences, and policy responses related to globalization. Topics covered include global financial crises, issues of development and global inequality, and the negative effects of globalization on the environment and climate.

Requirements:

Students are expected to write a policy memo, in which they develop solutions to a critical policy problem in IPE; the policy memo will be briefly presented in class. Those who want to do a “Prüfungsleistung”, may write a term paper (Hausarbeit), according to the requirements of their program.
