Digital news and information are being generated, circulated and consumed in new and unexpected ways. Journalism has taken on new forms, with a much wider range of content producers and the increasing role of technology in the newsroom. More forces have entered into the news production process to shape the news that audiences receive, influencing how journalism is conceived and the roles that it plays. Such changes have resulted in new legal concerns and implications on society.

This module examines closely these journalistic transformations to understand how they impact and are impacted by society in the era of digital news, by considering contemporary processes of news production, distribution, and consumption. This course will offer an international perspective, accounting for how journalism is practiced in different societies. Topics of interest include journalism’s evolving relationships with free speech, privacy, marginalized communities, big data, “fake news”, and a more participatory news audience.
