The course deals with the institutional design and impact of international human rights protection at the regional and global levels. Each session is devoted to a specific institution/instrument/mechanism, among them the UN Human Rights Council, regional human rights commissions and courts in Europe, Africa and the Americas, and several lesser known committees and mechanisms established by international treaties and organizations. We will trace the genesis of the respective mechanisms and their operation in practice, highlighting in particular the interplay of law and politics in producing outcomes and seeking to explain their (in)effectiveness in light of applicable political science theories.
