Elliptic curves are one-dimensional projective algebraic groups. They can be described concretely by cubic equations and the group operations are given by rational functions. Elliptic curves are basic objects in algebraic geometry and nice examples for the general theory of curves. They are also very important for number theory. For example, Fermat's last theorem can be reformulated as a statement about certain elliptic curves, and eventually this led to the solution of Fermat's problem.

The seminar will be an introduction to the many aspects of elliptic curves.
