While Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) is best known for his satires (among them, most famously Gulliver's Travels), he was also a political writer, who passionately engaged in the discourses and issues of his time.
In this course, we will look at the pamphlets which the Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral wrote and published pseudonymously as Drapier during the Wood's Halfpence affair (1724-25) and which earned him the title of honour "Hibernian Patriot." We will look closely at the genesis and publication history of these texts and discuss the various ways in which the printing process affected their transmission and reception, both contemporary and modern. In addition, we will look in some detail at how bibliography, the study of the physical book, can aid readers in constituting the copy text and in establishing a reliable, scholarly edition.
