In this class we will re-visit two well-known texts of Victorian and neo-Victorian literature respectively, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea, to explore their subtexts as part of a decolonial reading. In order to do so, we will discuss a number of key texts ranging from ecocriticism to postcolonial theory, queer and gender studies, feminism and disability studies and apply them to the novels. Students will have the chance to practice their critical reading skills, apply and consolidate their methodological knowledge from the foundational module ”Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies I and II” as well as develop and discuss their own research questions.
