Hauptseminar: Pluralist Approaches in Chinese Religions (Religious and Pluralism IV) SS 2020, Perry Schmidt-Leukel

China has a long experience with religious diversity. The question of how to interpret the fact of religious diversity has often been at the center of traditional reflection in the various religious traditions of China. One of the most remarkable products of this discourse has been the idea of an inner harmony or unity between the three religions of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism – an idea which may count as a proto-pluralist approach. In its first part, the seminar will discuss approaches to religious diversity in traditional Chinese thought. The second part will look at contemporary Chinese reflections on religious diversity which create a link between traditional Chinese thinking an Western concepts of religious pluralism.
