Course Overview:

The course Foundations of Education: Philosophical, Political and Social Perspectives explores and analyses some of the underlying issues within contemporary educational policies, practices, and theories. It grounds the routine realities of the classroom within larger philosophical, political, and sociological contexts, offering an interdisciplinary perspective that allows students to reflect upon the structures and practices of education. Through classic and contemporary text work and discussions, we will explore different understandings of education and place a focus on overarching questions related to the conceptualization, organization and legitimation of educational provision, thus highlighting and reinforcing the relationship between the theory and the practice of education.

Course Objectives:

- to offer students a deeper multidisciplinary perspective from which to interpret, question, reflect upon , and engage with the underlying issues within modern educational theory and practice;
- to link the theory of the texts with the lived reality and experience of students;
- to make explicit and to question the implicit norms underlying education;
- to foster students' self-reflexivity towards education in professional contexts.
