Prof. Dr. Renate Buschmann holds the chair of “Digital Arts and Cultural Mediation” at the WittenLab. Zukunftslabor Studium fundamentale at Witten/Herdecke University since 2020. Previously, she was Director of the IMAI Media Art Foundation in Düsseldorf from 2008 to 2019.

She studied Art History, Archaeology and Pre- and Early History in Cologne and Florence and completed her doctorate on the curatorial concept of the “between” exhibitions (1969–73) at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. She specializes in the archiving, conservation and curatorial mediation of time- and technology-based art. Her research focuses on the dialog between contemporary art and technology and the digital accessibility of museums, collections and archives.

From 2018 to 2020, Renate Buschmann realized the BMBF project “erschließen/präsentieren/kommunizieren. Cataloging and indexing moving images from the imai Foundation”. She designed the first permanent exhibition of the IMAI Foundation’s video art archive, which opened at the NRW-Forum in 2019. From 2015 to 2018, she led a research project on the development of German video art distribution and published the book “Video Visionen. The media art agency 235 Media as an alternative in the art market” together with Jessica Nitsche. In 2020, she curated the first retrospective on the film artist Lutz Mommartz with the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
