on scientific and scientific-practical activity of laboratory chief of Kharkov Physico-Technical Institute of the UkrSSR Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist of the UkrSSR, Associate Member of the UkrSSR Academy of Sciences. Doctor of Physico-Mathematical sciences, Professor
VOLKOV Dmitry Vasilyevich
D.V. Volkov, b. 1925, Russian, member of the CPSU from 1968. After
finishing the post-graduate course in
D.V. Volkov is the author of deep and widely used ideas if elementary particles physics.
The most essential scientific results, received by D.V. Volkov are as follows:
1. The discovery and research of relativistic wave fields quantization methods, known under the name of parastatistics (1959-60). Works by Volkov in parastatistics stimulated theoretical and experimental statistical research of known elementary particles as well as hypothetical particles – quarks.
2. Discovery in authorship with V.N. Gribov the so-called "Regge poles conspiracy" consisting in setting of definite interactions for particles scattering amplitudes with spin in asymptotic area of high energies (1962-63).
3. Carrying out of a great cycle of works in elementary particles systematics on the basis of higher symmetries groups representations and their collinear subgroups, introduced by D.V. Volkov independently from other authors (1965-1967). The experimentally verified correlations for mass reasoning difference received by D.V. Volkov, their partial widths and electro-magnetic form-factors were of great importance for checking of inner symmetry groups application (in particular, non-compact symmetry groups) in elementary particles physics.
4. Research of Goldstone particles interactions in systems with degenerated vacuum. In the works related to this direction D.V. Volkov, basing on group theory and geometrical methods of the French mathematician E. Cartan, constructed the general theory of Goldstone particles interaction phenomenological description for arbitrary spontaneously broken inner symmetry group (1968-71). Simultaneously identical results were received by a group of foreign theoretical physicists (Wess, Coleman, Callan, Zumino). Later (1971-73) D.V. Volkov particularly generalized the method, developed by him, into groups (and subgroups), including space-time variables transformations.
5. In works by D.V. Volkov with collaborators a number of basic notions of supersymmetry and supergravity were formulated – the new intensively developing elementary particles direction, having its aim the creation of unitary theory, including all known interactions.
In the works by D.V. Volkov and V.P. Akulov which gained wide acknowledgement 4-dimentional Minkowski space due to additional spinor anticommuting coordinates introduction was extended to more general space, i.e. superspace, and Poincare group transformation was extended to Poincare supergroups. It was shown, that spontaneously broken Poincare group was accompanied by Goldstone fermions raise with spin ½. (1971-73).
The works by D.V. Volkov done in collaboration with V.A. Soroka (1973-74) were the first works in the world literature in supergravity. In these works it was shown that under translation from global supersymmetry transformations to their local generalizations the appropriate gauge fields are gravitational field and certain field number with spin 3/2. It was shown, that under supersymmetry breaking the field with spin 3/2 gains mass, but in Einstein equations the cosmological term appears.
D.V. Volkov with collaborators performed pioneer works in main notions of differential geometry formulation on superspaces (1975-76). The underlying of superspaces from the physical point of view nonvanishing torsion tensor and with Lorentz holonomy group was first shown. These results have prominent importance for supergravity theory.
The mechanism of subspace spontaneous compactification in Kaluza-Klein
theories type was suggested and the cycle of works in spontaneous subspaces
compactification was done in d=10 and d=11-dimentional supergravity theories
(1980-1986). Much later the analogue experiments carrying out began in
D.V. Volkov also carried out the works in quantum electrodynamics, in dual models, in shell nucleus model, in spin waves theory and in other theoretical physics directions. As a whole D.V. Volkov wrote more than one hundred scientific works.
D.V. Volkov carries out a huge work in educating scientific stuff. He created the theoretical-group approach school in elementary particles physics. Among his pupils there are 10 candidates and 2 Doctors in physical and mathematical sciences.
D.V. Volkov carries out a large scientific organizing work and social
work, he is the member of Editorial Office of the journal "Nuclear physics"
and the collection "Nuclear physics and cosmic rays problems", he
is the member of a number of Scientific Councils. Under his active part the
direction of high energy physics was created in
D.V. Volkov was many times elected to the Party Bureau of KhPhTI theoretical departments. He is an active lector of the "Knowledge" Society, the President of Librarian Council of KhPhTI.
