PhD Project: Syntheses, structural investigation and physical properties of intermetallic cerium compounds

Abstract of Research Project

The syntheses, structural investigation, magnetic properties and hydrogenation behaviour of intermetallic RETX compounds (RE= rare Earth transition metal, T=late transition metal, X=element of the 3rd, 4th, or 5th main group) are in the central focus of the present research project.
Among the rare earths Ce, Eu and Yb which exhibit variable valence behaviour will be mainly focused. In the compounds, rare earth metals being electropositive in nature exhibit different electronic and intermediate valence states and giving rise to highly interesting magnetic and electrical properties - Kondo or heavy fermion behavior, antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic ordering, strong crystal field splitting, or superconductivity etc.
In order to obtain a comprehensive insight of structural features, Mössbauer spectroscopy, solid state NMR techniques are performed parallel to X-ray powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties are measured with PPMS. The structural and magnetic properties of the RETX compounds can be changed through application of high pressure or via hydrogenation. Another goal of this study is to search for new hydrogen storage materials. The hydrogen absorption experiments will be performed in collaboration with Dr. B. Chevalier (ICMCB-CNRS, Bordeaux).
