PhD Project: Stereoselective Synthesis of Bicyclic σ Receptor Ligands
Abstract of Research Project
Sigma receptors were postulated in 1976 by Martin et al. Today it is well accepted that σ receptors are
unique non-opioid, non NMDA receptors in the brain and also in the periphery. Sigma receptor ligands have
antipsychotic, antidepressive, neuroprotective as well as anti cocaine activity.
In order to learn more about the three dimensional structure of σ receptors, novel, highly potent σ
receptor ligands with restricted conformational flexibility and defined stereo chemistry are required.
Our aim is to synthesize and to pharmacologically evaluate bicyclic σ receptor ligands (1) stereoselectively.
